A CASE STUDY ON YOUNG LEARNERS’ ATTITUDES IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT CITRA KASIH KINDERGARTEN SAMARINDA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2014/2015

The title of this study is young learners’ attitudes in learning English at Citra Kasih Kindergarten Samarinda. In this study, the researcher observed and interviewed young learners’ attitudes in learning English and the reasons of their attitudes during the lesson.
The main purposes of this study are to find out the young learners’ attitudes in learning English and the reasons of the young learners give positive or negative attitudes in learning English at Citra Kasih Kindergarten Samarinda. The design of this study is case study that aimed at describing young learners’ attitudes in learning English. The observation and interview were used to collect data. The subjects of this study were selected by purposive sampling technique.
The researcher selected four young learners of Citra Kasih Kindergarten Samarinda who gave positive and negative attitudes in learning English. The four students consist of one boy and one girl who showed positive attitudes and the boy and girl who showed negative attitudes.
In the observation, the researcher took role as a passive participant. In interview, she interviewed four young learners, their parents, and the English teacher. In analyzing the data, the researcher used three concurrent flow activities by Miles and Huberman known as interactive model. They consist of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings of this study showed that four respondents gave different attitudes in learning English. From parents and teacher’s interviews, the researcher found that R1 and R2 showed positive attitudes because they liked English and their curiosities of something new were very high. Conversely, R3 and R4 showed negative attitudes and they had different reasons. R3 was kinesthetic and he could not sit nicely while R4 was reserved and she did not speak much.
