THE EFFECT OF COOPERATIVE INTEGRATED READING AND COMPOSITION (CIRC) TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF THE SECOND GRADE OF SMK TI AIRLANGGA SAMARINDA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

One of the Cooperative Learning is Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method. CIRC method is developed to support traditionally used “Skill-based reading groups” approach. The students can learn from each other. They help each other in performing basic skill-building activities (such as oral reading, contextual guessing, asking questions, summarizing, writing a composition based on the story, revising-correcting composition).

Reading is a crucial skill in learning and communication, reading also process to understand information that is present in writing and also as the process use to learn and remember information present in studying. Reading comprehension is the ability to understand information in a text and interpret it appropriately. It means that to comprehend a text we need to have an ability to interpreting and associating information to understanding the massage from the text.

The purpose of this research were (1) To find the reading comprehension achievement of the second grade students of SMK TI Airlangga Samarinda before they are taught using CIRC method; (2) To find the reading comprehension achievement of the second grade students of SMK TI Airlangga Samarinda after they are taught using CIRC method; (3) To find if there is any difference of the students reading comprehension achievement before and after they are taught using CIRC method.

The design of this research was pre-experimental study with one-group pretest- posttest design. The procedures were pre-test, then treatments, and finally post-test. The test was written test with 30 items which were used to know students‟ achievement on reading comprehension. In analyzing the data, the researcher used t- test formula for nonindependent samples to measure the significant influence of CIRC method to students‟ achievement on reading comprehension.

The findings of this study showed that mean score of pre-test was 49.9 (failure)
and then the mean score of post-test was 71.2 (good). The analysis using t-test




indicated that tcounted was 9.35 and ttable for df = 19 at level 5% was 2.086. based on the result, tcounted was higher than ttable. So, The Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that CIRC method does improve the students‟ achievement on reading comprehension.
