READING STRATEGIES USED BY THE MAGISTER STUDENTS IN READING JOURNAL ARTICLES AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY IN ACADEMICYEARS OF 2015/2016

This study is focused on Reading Strategies Used by the Magister Students in Reading Journal Articles at English Department of Mulawarman University in Academic Years of 2015/2016. The purposes of this study are to find out the kinds of reading strategies used by the magister students at English Department of Mulawarman University and the reasons of the magister students of English Department of Mulawarman University in academic years 2015/2016 used certain reading strategies in reading journal articles.
This research was conducted at English Department of Mulawarman University. This research is qualitative design. The researcher used four steps in collecting the data: (1) gave the questionnaire to the respondents, (2) classified the questionnaire result into the numbers to determine what kind of reading strategies that respondents used while reading journal article, (3) took one respondent who have highest average score of each sub-category to conduct interview, and (4) conducted interview to the respondent about their reasons used such strategies. To analyze the data questionnaire, the researcher used MARSI scoring rubric by Mokhtari and Riechard (2002).
The result revealed that the Magister Students at English Department of Mulawarman University used various reading strategies; all the students used overall sub-categories of reading strategy while reading journal article, but there were six students tended to use Problem-Solving Reading Strategy (one of them included on Global Reading Strategy). Then, five students tended to use Global Reading Strategy and five students also tended to use Support Reading Strategy. In other words, the most frequently used was Problem-Solving Strategy, followed by Global Reading Strategy and Support Reading Strategy. The reasons they used certain strategies were because those strategies helped them to get better understanding of the difficult text, to read directionally, to get detail information, to know and remember the unfamiliar words when reading journal articles.
