THE FACTORS AFFECTING STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN LEARNING ENGLISH BY THE TWELFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK NEGERI 9 SAMARINDA

The study was done because the students have many problems in learning English, it can be linguistic and non-linguistic problems. The researcher tried to find the problems that effecting them, especially in SMKN 9 Samarinda. The problems can be from the students itself, the teachers, the method, the environment around the students and school, and it also can be from the tools and infrastructures of the school.
The purpose of the study was to find the factors and problems that affected twelfth grade students of SMKN 9 Samarinda.
The study was a quantitative design. Twelfth grade students of SMKN 9 as the population of the study and the researcher took 50 students as the sample of the study. The data was collected using questionnaire with 25 statements that 5 statements indicated each factors in learning English problems. Data was analyzed by using mean and percentage technique.
The factors affecting the students’ problems are measured by the score of statements from each factor. Those factors, as mentioned from the most to the least influence, 23% to the student factor, 21% to the teacher factor, method factors (19%) and 19% also to the environment factor, tools and infrastructure problem factor (18%). Based on the computation result, it is found that the mean of students affected problems in learning English was 60,94. It means that the students are affected with the problems factors. Based on the average score 60,94, obtained from the questionnaire,2 statements (8%) belong to very affected category, the statements were about teachers’ attendance (S.2) and students’ interest (S.23). 17 statements (68%) belong to affected category, they were about teachers’ personality (S.3,10), class condition (S.4), students’ interest (S.5,15), school’s facilities (S.6,13,18), environment condition inside and outside of the class (S.7,14), students’ motivation (S.11,25), teachers’ teaching method (S.17,19,21), bounding of teachers and students (S.20) and school location (S.22). 6 statements (24%) belong to unaffected category, they were about class capacity (S.1), time schedule (S.8), schools facilities such as students’ handbooks and English laboratory (S.9,12), giving motivation by the teachers (S.16), the using of same method (S.24).
