According to speech act theory, words can represent several implied meaning. In order to distinguish it, illocutionary force is the key aspect in determining the meaning behinds words. Due to this phenomenon, the researcher is interested to analyze illocutionary force. The aim of this study is to examine kinds of illocutionary force in The Economist magazine limited to Asia news headings, and also to find out the meaning of Illocutionary force implied in Asia news headings toward the issues of the news.
The design of this study focuses on words rather than number, thus researcher uses qualitative analysis. In examining the content of data, the researcher uses content analysis. In this study as well, the researcher is the key instrument because she directly involves in collecting and analyzing the data.
While conducting the study, the researcher did not use all of Asia news headings in The Economist magazine 2013. The researcher used the edition of July to December 2013 since illocutionary force mostly implied in these editions. Therefore the researcher took this edition as research object. After analyzing research object, the researcher found that all types of Searle illocutionary force classifications appeared such as assertive, directive, expressive, declarative and commissive. Overall, assertive illocutionary force was mostly found in this study. Thus, it could be concluded that mostly Asia news heading asserted truthful statement that in line with the current circumstances around Asia.
