Teaching learning Biology by using bilingual (Indonesian-English) at the Junior High School has various difficulties which faced by the students. In teaching learning process, the students should not only enable to go learning Biology systemically, but also they should incidentally enable to master the English. That is why the students should be supported by several of elementswhich related with this bilingual class, like teacher, school and government.
Basically, the teachers who teach science such as Biology in this class are notfrom English major. Moreover, In Biology subject, the teachers have to giveexplanation more by using speaking English and Indonesian about life. There arecertain terms in the field of science such as Biology that are different fromEnglish. So the teachers might mistranslate it. As a result, students also can finddifficulties in understanding the lesson.
The purpose of the study is to answer the research problem suggested,namely to find out the difficulties faced by the third grade students of bilingual inlearning Biology through English at SMP N 1 Samarinda.
The study is conducted at SMP N 1 Samarinda in academic year2008/2009. The research is qualitative-quantitative. The instrument used here isobservation, interview and English competence test. For English competence testconsist of 10 essay items. Then, the researcher used flow model of Miles andHubberman to analyze qualitative data such as observation and interview.The result reveals that the third grade students of English mastery was oneof the factors of difficulties in learning Biology by using bilingual, moreover thereare certain terms in the field of Biology that make student’s face difficulty inmemorizing and translate it. The bilingual teachers especially the Biologyteachers are in learning process so they need support and attention from Englishteachers in that school, school and government. The students and the Biology
teachers in bilingual class should use strategies to learn Biology terms likesupported media and list of Biology terms.
