ANALYSIS OF CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS IN SOCIAL STUDY BOOK FOR THE THIRD GRADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The purpose of this research was intended to analyze the questions in the social study book “IPS Terpadu” published by Erlangga Book Company where this book was used by Muhammadiyah 1 Elementary School. Besides to analyze the questions in the book, it was also intended to (1) know whether the bookapplies critical thinking questions, (2) know the frequency of Bloom’s Cognitivetaxonomy levels used in the book, (3) know the frequency of high and low criticalthinking questions used in the book.
The design of this research is combination of qualitative and quantitativedesigns. The qualitative design was used to do content analysis of the book, andthe quantitative design was used to calculate the number of the critical thinkingquestions used in the social study book.
In collecting the data needed for this research, researcher do steps asfollows: firstly, researcher collected whole evaluation questions, the compilationof questions in the end of each lesson, in the social study book. After collect allquestions, researcher started to analyze each question using Bloom’s Cognitivetaxonomy and categorize it based on level of Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy. Afterall questions has been categorized, researcher started to calculate the total numberof each level of Bloom’s Cognitive taxonomy in each level, and also the totalnumber of low and high Critical thinking questions based on Bloom’s CognitiveTaxonomy.
The finding research showed that the social study book contain criticalthinking questions based on Bloom’s cognitive taxonomy which consists of 60%of knowledge level, 26.54% of comprehension level, 5.00% of application level,5.38% of analysis level, 0.38% of synthesis level, 2.69% of evaluation level. inaddition, the data showed that the book contained 86.54% of low level criticalthinking question and 13.46% of high level critical thinking question.
In conclusion, the social study book “IPS Terpadu” which was publishedby Erlangga Book Company and used by Muhammadiyah 1 Elementary School inteaching social study contains more low level of critical thinking questions thanhigh level of critical thinking question. Furthermore, giving students of thirdgrade elementary school high level of critical thinking who are at 8 to 9 years oldis appropriate consider at their age, the intellectual development has alreadysupport them to process high level of critical thinking questions.
