THE USE OF STRESS BY THE FOURTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY
aBSTRACT
The idea underlying this research is that the students of Mulawarman University have little knowing about stress, so sometimes it becomes a trouble when the students find words that use stress in its syllable, cause stress in certain words will change the meaning base on context of sentence. This study has expect to give contribution, solution or at least give new knowledge to the students.
The purposes of this study are (1) to know what types of error on stress use that made by fourth semester students of English Department and (2) to know how the students made the error. In this study the writer used descriptive study. The writer took 54 students as a sample. The data were collected by using oral and pronunciation test of stress, where the students given sample of 15 sentences that had 30 words that must pronounce by students. The writer recorded the students pronunciation then analyzed the error.
Based on the data obtained, the writer could explain the result of the study, as follow : the students made error 40,3 % of the total errors or students made
162 time errors in primary stress, 50,5 % of the total errors or students make 197 time errors in the secondary stress and 9,2 % of the total errors or students make
37 time errors in tertiary stress. And how the students make error was when the students found stress which constitutes two meanings or constitute between verb, noun or adjective just for, some students also had problem to used right stress when they met new words that seldom used by the students or the word that had a similarity with Indonesian language.
