THE EFFECT OF USING SCRIPTED ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE TO STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ACHIVEMENT OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS IN SMPN 10 SAMARINDA

Speaking as spoken languange is an important skill in learning languange. It is one of primary subject that should be developed in teaching English as a foreign languange. Therefore we need to make a correct strategy to motivated students to develop their ability of speaking in English. Role play is one of teaching techniques that can improve students’ speaking ability in any situation, and helps students interact and teacher can effectively use it as a teaching media.
The purpose of the study is to know if there is a significant effect of by using scripted role play technique in teaching speaking to students’ speaking achievement of the first grade students in SMPN 10 Samarinda. The population of this was the first grade students of SMPN 10 Samarinda academic year 2013/2014. The writer took 40 students as the sample of this study.
This research used an experimental design as its research design which consist two groups those are experimental and control group, each group consist of 20 students. This study consist of an independent variable, the ability of speaking skill using role-play. And the first grade of SMPN 10 Samarinda were dependent variable. The data collection and data analysis was based on the calculation of Ttest for dependent group. In analyzing the data, the writer used t-test to find out the significance difference between the result of test before treatments (pretest)and after treatment (posttest)
The result of this study showed that : the mean score of the control group before treatment is 57.50 and for the experimental group is 58.00. And the mean score of control group after treatment is 62.40 and for the experimental is 70.25. It showed that there is significant difference before and after using role play towards students speaking achievement of the first grade in SMPN 10 Samarinda. From the computation done, the value of t computed (5.3554) is higher than t (2.02439)at the level 0.05. it indicated that null hypothesis is rejec and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Then it can be concluded if There is significant effect by using scripted role play technique in teaching speaking to students’ speaking ability of the first grade students in SMPN 10 Samarinda
