Background: Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease that commonly occur in the population over the age of 45 years (elderly). However, the incidence of type 2 diabetes also occurs at younger age nowadays, at the age less than 45 years (adult). There are several factors that can influence the onset of type 2 diabetes at a younger age, such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and lipid profiles. Objective: To determine the differences in BMI, blood pressure and lipid profiles among the patients with type 2 diabetes on adult and the elderly group in Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Hospital Samarinda.
Methods: This study uses comparative analytic method with cross-sectional study design. The study consisted of 59 samples, which are the outpatients of Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Hospital Samarinda. Data on weight, height, blood pressure and lipid profiles were obtained from medical records of patients when first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Results: Type 2 diabetes patients in Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Hospital Samarinda mostly first diagnosed in elderly age (74.58%), while those diagnosed in adult fewer (25.42%). The adult group has higher BMI (p = 0.015), higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.943 and p = 0.215), higher total cholesterol (p =
0.071), higher triglycerides (p = 0.002), lower HDL (p = 0.006) and higher LDL (p = 0.051) compared to the elderly group.
Conclusion: There are differences in BMI, triglyceride, and HDL levels between patients with type 2 diabetes in adult and elderly group. However, there is no difference in blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL levels between the two groups.
