REWARD AND PUNISHMENT USED BY THE TEACHER IN THE ENGLISH TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS IN THE CLASSROOM OF SMA NEGERI 1 TANAH GROGOT IN ACADEMIC YEARS 2015/2016

Reward and Punishment is one of strategy used by the teacher in order to make condusive classroom condition possible to conduct teaching and learning process in the classroom. It is also used for increase the students‟ appropriate behavior and decrease students‟ inappropriate behavior. The purposes of this study are (1) to know kinds of rewards and punishments the teacher give to student in the English classroom, (2) to know the frequency of reward and punishment that the teacher give to the student in the English classroom and (3) to investigate how the teacher give reward and punishment to students in the English classroom.
The research applies a qualitative study at SMA Negeri 1 Tanah Grogot. The subject of this study is an English teacher. The data are taken from observation and interview. The observation is conducted in six meetings, whereas the interview is conducted in Bahasa to get deeper information. Flow Diagram Analysis by Miles&Huberman was used for data analysis.
This study shows that kinds of rewards used by the teacher in the English classroom are social reinforcers, token reinforcers and activity reinforcers whereas for punishment are aversive stimuli, response cost and attention extinction. The frequency each type of reward and punishment used by the English teacher. It clearly shows that social reinforcers is the most frequent reward used by the teacher in the teaching learning process in the classroom whereas for punishment, positive punishment is used. How the teacher gave reward including praising different words or phrases, teacher‟s fairness in giving reward and praising words or phrases followed by giving other rewards. In order hand in giving punishments including, giving punishment to the student based on the frequency of the bad behavior and giving punishment in the form of unphysical punishment.
In addition, the result of observation and interview showed the appropriate application of rewards and punishments can be an alternative way to manage students‟ behavior in the English classroom.
