STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE USE OF STORYTELLING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AT SMKN 1 SAMARINDA

Thesis: Students' Perceptions of the Use of Storytelling in English Language Learning at SMKN 1 Samarinda. Supervised by Dr. Bibit Suhatmady. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the implementation of storytelling as a teaching strategy to enhance speaking skills, enrich vocabulary, and boost learning motivation among 11th-grade students at SMKN 1 Samarinda. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three students and one English teacher as a triangulation source. The findings reveal that storytelling positively and significantly impacts students’ speaking confidence. Students reported feeling more confident speaking in front of the class after practicing storytelling. Additionally, this strategy effectively enhances students’ vocabulary as the story context helps them recall and understand new words better. Storytelling activities also increased student engagement as they were perceived as more engaging and relevant compared to traditional methods. However, some challenges were identified, including public speaking anxiety and fear of peer judgment. These findings emphasize the importance of creating a supportive learning environment to minimize psychological pressure. Based on the results, it can be concluded that storytelling is an innovative and effective teaching strategy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, which not only strengthens linguistic skills but also enhances students’ affective aspects.
