THE EFFECT OF LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES ON READING COMPREHENSION
Students’ use of language learning strategies is important for reading comprehension because it boosts their chances of success when they concentrate on these strategies, form solid study habits, and comprehend how to learn the best method. The main objective of this research was to determine the effect of different Language Learning Strategies (LLS) on reading comprehension. The study was conducted at Mulawarman University, which has a population of 97 English Department Class of 2022 students. They are students from Class A, B, and C. The researcher used a simple random sampling technique to select 48 students as the sample for this study. A quantitative method was employed, and the researcher’s study design was causal-comparative. The research tools included a questionnaire/SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) and a reading test. The independent sample t-test formula was used to analyze the data, which was generated using SPSS 22 software. The study results showed a significant difference in students’ language learning strategies between those who used direct and indirect strategies on their reading comprehension, as indicated by the t-test, where the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.048, which was lower than the p value (0.048 < 0.05), leading to the acceptance of Ha and rejection of Ho. Additionally, the mean score analysis showed that the direct strategies resulted in greater reading comprehension, with the direct strategies group scoring 79.22 compared to 72.08 for the indirect strategies group. In conclusion, the study showed that students using the direct strategies slightly outperformed those using the indirect strategies in reading comprehension, although the difference was modest in size.
