The Reflection of Racial Discrimination Issues in 42 (2013) Film
This research examines the 42 (2013) film directed by Brian Helgeland as the research object. The purpose of this research is to find out how the types of discrimination are represented which refer to forms or racism. To achieve the research objectives, this research uses the three Kinds of Discrimination theory by Fred L. Pincus that is Individual, Institutional, and Structural Discrimination and the characterization theory by Petrie and Boggs. The research uses descriptive qualitative research methods to analyze the problems of the types of acts of discrimination reflected in the film. The data in this research is in the form of dialogue and actions that show three types of discrimination carried out by the white race group against the black race group. Then the second data of discrimination show differential treatment in the use of public facilities that is legal but still appears to be detrimental to minority groups. And the final discrimination shows acts of discrimination that occur based on personal feelings or personal problems, resulting in actions that cause minority groups to feel disadvantaged by this treatment. The three types of discrimination that occur in the film are forms of unfair treatment that occur against the black race group because the majority group feels that they have the superior race. And several characters in this film are also depicted using characterization through appearance, dialogue, external, and internal action.
