DECONSTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS OF A CHARACTER PORTRAYED IN I AM MOTHER FILM BY GRANT SPUTORE
This research concerns itself with the deconstruction of a character by the name of Mother within the film I Am Mother written by Grant Sputore. The aim of the research is to introduce the concept of deconstruction as a literary theory and then apply it to the character by the name of Mother in the film. Deconstruction is a theory first invented by Jacques Derrida as a way to critically analyse a text to find a different or opposite perspective of what’s written in the text. This research used the qualitative method. The data in this research are dialogues from the film that involves the deconstruction of the character Mother. The researcher then analysed the character of Mother based on the data collected with a deconstructive perspective. The findings showed a new opposite perspective. Mother is first shown to be a malevolent being that shows hostility towards humanity. But further analysis with deconstruction showed that Mother is a benevolent being that tries to rebuild humanity after it is shown that humanity simply destroys itself. Thus it can be concluded that although the initial perspective towards Mother might be that of a malevolent being. By using deconstruction, Mother can also be seen as a benevolent
being.
