The research aims to analyze Scott Lang's journey as a hero in the film Ant-Man (2015) using the Hero's Journey theory by Joseph Campbell. The researcher chose the first Ant-Man (2015) film because this film is the initial story of the Ant-Man films and contains the hero's journey of the main character, Lang. The researcher used qualitative research as a method and the archetypal approach to analyze the hero's journey of the character Lang in the Ant-Man (2015) film. The result of this research showed that Lang's journey as a hero followed the pattern of a hero's journey. The hero's journey by Campbell is divided into three phases: departure, initiation, and return. In the departure phase, Lang passed five stages: the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, and the belly of the whale. In the initiation phase, Lang passed four stages: the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, apotheosis, and the ultimate boon. In the return phase, Lang passed six stages: refusal of the return, the magic flight, rescue from without, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds, and freedom to live. Despite Lang's background being the opposite of a hero as a former thief, Lang proved that he could be a hero and pass all the phases of the hero's journey.
