This research aims to find out the types of rejective behaviors represented in the film and analyze the responses that the black people characters did toward the act of rejective behaviors to understand the meaning and situation to the narrative elements in the film. Allport’s theory of rejective behaviors is applied to see how the act of racism was represented in the film entitled Antebellum. This research shows there were five types of rejective behaviors, but Allport simplified it into three types including verbal rejection, discrimination, and physical attack. Additionally, this research described the responses to rejective behaviors portrayed by Black people characters after experiencing those behaviors. There were twelve types of responses toward rejective behaviors, such as obsessive concern, denial of membership, withdrawal and passivity, clowning, slyness and cunning, self-hate, aggression toward own-group, prejudice against out-group, sympathy, fighting-back, enhanced striving, and symbolic status striving. Moreover, the analysis of the responses is also supported with the characterization theory by Petrie and Boggs. There were eight methods of characterization, such as appearance, dialogue, external action, internal action, reaction of other characters, contrast, caricature and leitmotif, and lastly through the choice of name as it was continued with a mimetic approach since characters in the film represented the real-life situation. Within the analysis, all types of rejective behaviors toward the black people characters were found in the analysis. There were four out of twelve responses that were found, and for the characterization methods only four were used.
