An Analysis of Stuttering Portrayed by Michael Turner in The Way We Talk Film
Stuttering is a speech disorder in which fluency is disrupted by repetition and prolongation of syllables, sounds and words. The Way We Talk is one of the films about stuttering and it is a personal documentary film written and directed by Michael Turner and Alyssa Burge. The purpose of this study is to describe and identify the types of stuttering and the factors that cause stuttering in a stuttering character named Michael Turner in the documentary film The Way We Talk. Turner's stuttering types were determined using Campbell & Hill's theory. The research design is qualitative which employed Turner’s utterance as the data of the study. The results showed that the stuttering types in Turner's utterances were identified into three types, namely repetition (which is divided into two subtypes such as part-word repetition and whole-word repetition), sound prolongation and block/silent pause. Part-word repetition is the most commonly experienced because Michael Turner tends to repeat sounds when he makes disfluencies in his utterances. Michael Turner's stuttering is caused by two factors: internal factors such as the genetic aspect, caused by a genetic condition inherited from his grandfather, and external factors such as family dynamics, caused by the family's ignorance and lack of knowledge about his stuttering, and stress or anxiety, which made Turner's stuttering increase when he was under pressure.
