The Correlation between Motivation in Online Reading and Reading Comprehension of Third-Year at English Department of Mulawarman University
Motivation was refers to an individual’s overall willingness to undertake something. Online reading was the process of delivering the meaning in the context of digital text. Reading comprehension was he capability to read text, process it, and comprehend its meaning. This study was conducted to find out the students’ motivation in online reading, students’ reading comprehension, and the correlation between motivation in online reading and reading comprehension of Mulawarman University students. This research was a correlational study. The population of this study was the third-year of english department of mulawarman university. The sampling technique used was simple sampling technique. There were total of 60 students as sample. Motivation for Online Reading Questionnaire (MORQ) from Forzani, et al. (2020) and Longman Complete Course for the TOEFL Test by Phillips (2001) were used as instruments to collect the data of this study. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, and inferential statistics that was Spearman rho as the analytical statistics for the non-parametric statistics. The researcher used JASP 0.18.3.0 as the analytical software. The result showed that students’ motivaiton was in moderate level with the mean score of 73.317. Addition, the score of reading comprehension score was in high level with mean score of 37.533. With regards to the correlation between students’ motivation and online reading and reading comprehension, it was found that there is weak correlation that was 0.358 with rvalue 0.001. That was means that Ha was rejected and Ho was accepted. It meant that there is weak correlation between the students’ motivation in online reading and students’ reading comprehension of English Department of Mulawarman University students. This study also found that the motivation in online reading is not the only one factors that affect students’ reading comprehension. Future researchers are suggeted to look for other aspects such as which related to motivation vocabulary, grammar, and motivation to read.
