MING LEE’S ANXIETY AND DEFENSE MECHANISMS IN TURNING RED FILM
This research aims to analyze the type of anxiety experienced by Ming Lee, one of the characters in the film Turning Red, and also analyze the defense mechanisms used by Ming Lee to reduce anxiety. This research uses a qualitative method and a psychoanalytic approach from Sigmund Freud's theory. In this research, the researcher collected data from the dialogue and actions of characters. The results of this study show that seven data indicate anxiety and defense mechanisms. In this analysis, there are two types of anxiety out of the three types of anxiety contained in
the analysis such as neurotic anxiety triggered by fear of potential dangers that may not happen to Ming Lee’s daughter and realistic anxiety triggered by the changes in Ming Lee’s daughter body that turned into a red panda if she did not control her emotions. To reduce her anxiety, Ming Lee uses four of the eight forms of defense mechanisms are contained in the analysis namely repression there is to carry out removing memories to prevent anxiety, reaction formation is characterized by behaving in a manner contradictory to one’s true feelings do disguise anxiety triggers, displacement occurs when emotions are redirected from their source to a safer target and sublimation involves changeling anxiety into positive activities.
