The Correlation between EFL Students’ Perception of Classroom Emotional Climate and Speaking Ability at Mulawarman University

Advisors: (1) Dr. Desy Rusmawaty, MA and (2) Dr. Istanti Hermagustiana, MA The views of students on the amount of enjoyment and achievement they had in the foreign language class, especially in speaking, showed how important supportive peers and professional and emotional interaction between teachers were. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the correlation between students’ perception of classroom emotional climate and speaking ability. This study used quantitative research with a correlation design. The Slovin formula was used to determine the sample size of this study; it was found that 80 students from the fifth semester in English education class were chosen as the sample. The instrument of this study used a questionnaire and documents of EFL students’ speaking scores. The questionnaire used in this study was adapted from McLure et al (2022), namely the University Classroom Emotional Climate Survey (UCEC), which was used to find out the students’ perceptions about CEC in speaking class. The research data were analyzed with inferential statistics. The findings showed that the students’ perception of CEC was “positive” (3.12). Moreover, the documents of EFL students’ speaking scores were from the speaking for specific purposes course to find out the speaking ability of fifth semester EFL students. The findings showed that the speaking ability of fifth semester EFL students was “good” (78.96). Furthermore, the correlation between CEC and EFL students’ speaking ability was analysed through the Pearson correlation coefficient, and it was concluded that CEC and speaking ability had a moderately significant correlation with each other (0.448). Therefore, the lecturers could develop student comfort, willingness to communicate (WTC), and satisfaction by showing warmth, respect, and interest in them on a frequent basis, also promoting their participation with each other, and providing challenging projects or assignments in speaking class.
