THE STUDENTS' STRATEGIES, CHALLENGES, AND BENEFITS OF USING FILMS FOR LEARNING LISTENING AT THE ENGLISH DEPARMENT OF MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY
The students' strategies, challenges, and benefits of using films for learning to listen are important to observe because using films can be a highly effective way to learn listening skills. This study aims to (1) identify the strategies students use when learning listening skills through films, (2) uncover the challenges they face, and (3) highlight the benefits they gain from this approach. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving three students selected based on specific criteria. Data were collected through interviews. Researchers analyze data using coding. (1) The findings reveal diverse strategies employed by participants, categorized into metacognitive, cognitive, and socioaffective. Metacognitive strategies such as Functional Planning, Directed Attention, Selective Attention, Self-monitoring, and Self-evaluation. Cognitive strategies such as Resourcing, Note-taking, Deduction, Inferencing and Repetition. Socioaffective strategies like Cooperation and Question for Clarification fostered collaborative learning and language proficiency development. (2) Despite these effective strategies, several challenges were identified. These are the vocabulary levels in the films genre, the speaking speed of the actors, and the accents used in the films. (3) Nevertheless, participants reported many benefits from using films to learn listening skills. These benefits included improved listening skills and pronunciation. Films also increased enjoyment, motivation, and self-confidence. To enhance listening skills through films, students should choose films that match their proficiency and interests, minimize distractions, and use tools like subtitles, while educators should select appropriate films and integrate strategies and discussions into the curriculum, and future research should explore larger sample sizes and address common challenges like fast speech and difficult accents.
