HORNEY’S NEUROTIC NEEDS AND NEUROTIC TRENDS ON KYA CLARK IN WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING (2022) FILM
This research aims to analyze the neurotic needs and trends of Kya Clark, the main character in the Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) film. Based on Delia Owens' 2018 novel, the film portrays Clark's life in the marsh of North Carolina. After being abandoned by her family and abused by her father, Clark grows up isolated, which leads to the development of neurotic needs and trends as coping strategies for her underlying anxiety. The analysis employs Karen Horney's psychoanalytic social theory and a psychological approach. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method because the analyzed data is described descriptively. The data obtained from events, dialogue, and actions that illustrate the main character's psychological state in the film. The findings reveal four neurotic needs experienced by Clark: the need for affection and approval, the need for a powerful partner, the need for independence and self-sufficiency, and the need for perfection and unassailability. These needs manifest in neurotic trends or behaviors that shape Clark's interactions with others, specifically the trends of moving toward people (compliant personality) and moving away from people (detached personality).
