An Analysis of Teacher Talk and Student Responses in the Classroom Interaction

This study investigates the teacher talk and student response used by teacher and students of MTS Al-Jihad during classroom interaction. It aimed to identify the category of teacher talk used by teacher and category of student responses used by students while interacting in the English class. This study focused on the seventh and eighth grade of MTS Al-Jihad and utilized a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected through observation, and interviews. The first finding revealed that all of the category of teacher talk namely deal with feelings, praises or encourages, uses idea of students, asks question, gives information, gives direction, and criticizes student behavior are used by teacher during classroom interaction. The second finding revealed that all category of student response namely, specific student response, initiated student response, silence, confusion, pretending or fake engaging, and not paying attention also used by students to respond to every interaction in the classroom.
