AN ANALYSIS OF EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACTS IN TURNING RED FILM
Turning Red (2022) is an American computer-animated film about friendship and the life of teenager who experiences emotional changes during puberty, so it arises utterances that express the feelings of the speaker which are considered as expressive speech acts. This film is inspired by the director’s reallife experience, and it raises a theme that is related to teenagers in society, which is puberty, an experience that every person must have passed through during adolescence, and this film was chosen to be the biggest premiere in the first week of release on a streaming program. This research focuses on analyzing expressive speech acts used by teenage characters in Turning Red film. This research is qualitative and uses a descriptive method. The data of this research were taken from the utterances of teenage characters which contained expressive speech acts. The data classification was analyzed using expressive speech acts theory by Searle and Vanderveken. The result showed that there were twelve kinds of expressive speech acts used with a total of 59 data, namely; apologize 6 data, thank 11 data, congratulate 1 data, complain 3 data, lament 2 data, protest 1 data, deplore 1 data, boast 3 data, compliment 15 data, praise 3 data, welcome 4 data, and greet 9 data. Based on the result, it was found that the kind most frequently used by teenage characters in Turning Red film is expressive speech acts of compliment which expresses the speaker’s positive feelings in the form of appreciation and admiration for someone’s appearance through utterance.
