Representation of the Other in Adua Novel by Igiaba Scego: A Postcolonial Analysis
Igiaba Scego's compelling novel Adua is explored to show the complex portrayal of the "Other" in great detail in this thesis. Through applying a postcolonial lens, the intricate dynamics of power, identity, and otherness that are characters throughout the story are revealed. The focus of the research is on Scego's deft handling of the characters' complex circumstances as a Somalian within an alienating Italian environment. The thesis reveals, via the characters' experiences during Adua’s stay in Rome, Italy, and Zoppe’s work as a collaborator to the Italians, the covert and overt methods of marginalization that the "Other" in a postcolonial society must contend with. It looks at the ways that internalized ideas of self, cultural biases, and societal structures all play a part in creating Adua's "otherness." In this thesis, the researcher used qualitative research methodology and the postcolonialism approach. Further, the theories that are used in this analysis include the theory of the representation of the Other by using the theories proposed by Said, Bertens, Hasal Al-Saidi and last but not least Tyson supported by the theory of characterization from Kenan. The result of this thesis, based on the findings of the analysis, is inferior as the most prominent followed by irrational. It is revealed that the perspectives of West and East happened and are clearly seen in this novel which are narrated in the way of indirect presentations.
