The Representation of 'the Other' Toward Florens in Toni Morrison's A Mercy novel
This thesis discusses about the representation of the Other towards the main character in Toni Morrsion’s A mercy Novel named Florens. The purposes of this thesis are to identify the representations of the Other in Florens character and describe the way the author characterized it to Florens character. In this thesis, the researcher used qualitative research methodology and postcolonialism approach. Further, the theories that are used in this analysis is the theory of the representation of the Other in reference to three experts (Bertens, Hasan Al-Saidi and Tyson) The results of this thesis show that Florens as one of the most important character in the novel reflected the representation of the Other within herself. The representations of the Other which reflected in Florens’s character in The A mercy novel are passive, irrational, inferior, foreign and unauthorized. The representation of the Other which is reflected in Florens character was characterized by indirect presentation, specifically troughs action and speech. Further, the researcher also found that most of the representation of the other in Florens character is a representation of a passive. It was represented through the way Florens explained herself and how other character’s reacted and responded to her.
