Illocutionary Acts Performed by Lisa Cuddy from the TV Show House
This research discusses the illocutionary acts used by Lisa Cuddy in the television show House (2004), focusing on the types of illocutionary acts found in the show with a pragmatic approach and using theory from Searle (1979). House is a television show about a diagnostician named Dr. Gregory House and his journey diagnosing illnesses that other doctors could not diagnose. In this show, Lisa Cuddy acts as the head of the hospital Dr. House works at. The researcher then presented her research with descriptive-qualitative method. Lisa Cuddy uses illocutionary acts with the most being assertives, and the least with the same amount being expressives and declarations. The result of this research shows that even though she has the position of authority, she often gives explanations and statements to show her stance as a higher position at the hospital rather than giving orders. Being respected also often puts her in a position of a mother figure among her peers, which leads to her having to use utterances to remind, inform, and assure.
