Figurative Language in Mitski's Song Lyrics in The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We (2023) Album
The research examines the application of various types of figurative language in song lyrics with the album titled The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We (2023). This research applies Laurence Perrine's figurative language theory using qualitative descriptive methods. The findings of this research reveal ten different types of figurative language used by Mitski throughout the album and data collected from the song lyrics. The researcher found ten different applications of figurative language, namely personification, simile,metaphor, apostrophe, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, overstatement, and irony. The analysis revealed a total of 107 figurative language data in the albums The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. The most frequently used type of figurative language is personification, where an abstract idea, object, or animal has human-like characteristics. The themes of the album are focused on love, past memories, loneliness, and even self-discovery in the song lyrics. The utilization of personification in this album strengthens each of the themes by giving it human attributes and creates a relatability to make it easier for readers to captivate their imagination.
