The purpose of this research is to determine the types of anxiety in Gemma’s character and to describe how Gemma acts to overcome her anxiety by using defense mechanisms. This research used Sigmund Freud’s theory of anxiety and defense mechanisms in analyzing M3gan film. This research is classified as a qualitative method because the data consists of dialogue and scenes from the M3gan film. Data was obtained from the film script and scenes. The result of this research shows that Gemma experiences Realistic anxiety stemming from her professional pressures and the failure of her robot project, coupled with the spoil loss of her family, paints a picture of immense emotional strain. Moral anxiety she experiences, particularly in her interactions with her nephew, highlights a conflict between her own frustrations and the consideration of others’ feelings. Neurotic anxiety triggered by unfamiliar situations and the fear of potential. Cole adds another annoyance to her already complex emotional state. Gemma overcomes her anxiety with five defense mechanisms, namely sublimation, repression, displacement, projection, and regression. Displacement protects her collectible item’s value over its function as a toy. Regression advises simplicity to manage stress. Projection shifts focus onto others’ needs. Sublimation channels emotions into acceptable behaviors, while repression suppresses frustrations to maintain composure, especially in unsettling encounters.
