GENDER INEQUALITY IN MARTHA HALL KELLY'S NOVEL LILAC GIRLS
In this research, the researcher analyzed the three main female characters Kasia, Herta, and Caroline. The research aim is to find out the forms of gender inequality in Kelly’s novel Lilac Girls. The researcher conducted this research by using the theory of gender inequality based on Lorber’s book Gender Inequality Feminist Theories and Politics. The data used in this research were in the form of dialogue and narration taken from the novel Lilac Girls. Based on the result of data analysis there were four forms of gender inequality namely form of work or economics lead to the indicators of treatment disparity, lack of equal opportunity, and ignorance. Form of education leads to the indicators of male dominance and poverty. Form of violence leads to the indicators of sexual exploitation, violence, and sexual harassment. The form of female subordination leads to the indicator of patriarchy. Through these three characters we can see how a woman experiences deviant and negative treatment which can occur in the work environment, education, and even social life in various other forms. These three characters even show how inequality itself can happen to anyone with various statuses and various situations.
