An Analysis of Swear Words in Don’t Breathe (2016) Film
Swearing is the most natural thing in the universe and is used to reflect the speaker's emotional state and to enlighten the audience (Jay and Janschewitz, 268). In this research, the researcher examines the types of swear words using the theory of Wardhaugh and finds out the function of swear words using the theory of Andersson & Trudgill from the film Don't Breathe (2016). The purpose of this study is to identify the types of swear words in the film and what are the functions of swear words expressed by the characters in the film Don't Breathe. This research uses descriptive qualitative where the data is in the form of utterances, sentences, and dialogue spoken by the characters in the film. The findings that the researcher got from this research were that all types of swear words consisting of six types, namely excretion, death, body function, religious matter, mother in law, and sex term were found. For function, the researcher found all data consisting of four types, namely expletive, abusive, humorous, and auxiliary. The researcher also revealed that one type of swearing can have more than one function because the function is seen based on the context when the expression occurs.
