Jungian Archetypes in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) Film

This study discusses the representation of Jungian archetypes through two main characters, Jean and Kavinsky in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) film. The research aims to identify types of archetypes represented by the two characters. The theory applied in this study is the four major archetypes by Carl Jung. Words and actions related to the discussion of Jungian archetypes represented by the two characters were the data in this study and collected from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) film directed by Susan Johnson. The research design of this study was qualitative research method with psychoanalysis approach. The results showed that Jean’s character represented all types of Jungian archetypes, and the reason mainly related to her leaked love letters problem that somehow led her into a fake romantic relationship with Kavinsky. Meanwhile, Kavinsky’s character represented only two archetypes, which were persona and anima, and also related to his fake relationship with Jean. Archetypes that played the role in uniting them into a real relationship were divided into three pairs: (1) Kavinsky’s anima and Jean’s persona; (2) Kavinsky’s persona and Jean’s shadow; and (3) Jean’s persona and Kavinsky’s anima. Their archetypes complemented, fulfilled, and created a safe place (a place where they were able to be their true self without worrying being judged) for each other’s needs in the film.
