EFL Undergraduates' Perceptions towards the Role of English Subtitles on Vocabulary Learning
The purpose of this study was to ascertain how EFL undergraduates perceived the impact of English subtitles on second-semester English Department majors' learning of vocabulary at Mulawarman University. A questionnaire served as the research instrument in this study, which employed a descriptive research design. The survey was distributed via Google Forms and included of two components. Section A's findings revealed that, out of 80 students, 69 had an 86% positive perception of watching movies with English subtitles. According to the results of section B, 72 out of 80 students (or 90%) felt that watching with English subtitles was an effective way to learn vocabulary. In summary, the students concluded that watching movies or shows with English subtitles is both enjoyable and beneficial to language learning. They also concurred that watching movies or shows with English subtitles is a useful and efficient way to learn vocabulary in EFL contexts. It is suggested that teachers can create a practice to show students clips from movies and encourage them to compile glossaries that they may use both within and outside of the classroom.
