IMPLEMENTATION OF ROLE PLAY METHOD IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SD NEGERI 001 SAMARINDA ULU IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

This thesis purpose is to find out the implementation of the Role Play method in teaching English to the fifth-grade students by English teachers of SD Negeri 001 Samarinda. The researcher used three steps in collecting the data: (1) taking pictures of teaching activity as the document, (2) use observation guide sheet to observe teacher’s teaching using role play which was adapted from one of Byrne (1986) type of role play, scripted role play, and (3) using semi-structured interview script to interview the teacher. To analyse the data, the three steps of Miles and Huberman (2010) interactive model consisting of three steps: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion, are used. The findings of thisresearch on how do teachers implement role play method to the fifth grade students shows that both teachers implement the role play method similarly, which is scripted role play method, both teachers also asks students to go in front of the class to do the role play, in implementation, there are differences found, female teacher gave clear guidance and instruction, while male teacher gave instruction and demonstrate on how students’ do the role play, while mixing the Indonesian and English language, this makes students undertstands much easier on how to do the role play. Another findings found in this research is that both teachers facing similar problems in implementing the role play method in teaching English, which were students low vocabularies, unconfident students, and lack of motivation. It is suggested that the both teachers needs to provide more time for students to practice their role plays, and the teachers needs to be always prepared in providing role play materials, giving feedback on to make students understand well about their performance and the lesson, guiding the students on how they will perform their roles in role play, and giving students’ applause and compliments after students’ complete their role play, to keep students confident and motivated in using and learning English.
