The Correlation Between Perception of English Fanfictions as Reading Materials and the Reading Comprehension of the English Language Education Program of Mulawarman University Academic Year 2021/2022 Students
The study about the use of English fanfictions in educational field has been increasing as digital era continues to develop. Individuals’ Reading interest and Reading Comprehension are highly affected by the Reading Materials, therefore this study aims to analyze whether or not there is a significant correlation between students perception of English fanfiction as reading material and the reading comprehension. This study used quantitative-correlational design. The population of this study were students in Mulawarman University. This research conducted random sampling, 51 students were chosen to be the sample. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire and test. There were three findings of this study. First, the finding of the students’ perception questionnaire shown majorly very positive perception of English fanfiction as reading material. Among the sample, there were 31 students who don’t read English fanfiction, which ended up having “neutral” perception (60.8%). There were 20 students who read English fanfiction (39.2%), among them, 19 students have “very” positive perception (37.2%) and 1 student (1.96%) have “positive” perception. There was no student with negative and very negative perception found in this study, indicating students in this research shared very positive and positive experience in the use of English fanfiction as reading material. For the second finding, the mean of the students’ reading comprehension test was 76.55 which considered as the “Good” score. There was a total of 35 students (69%) who scored “Very Good”, 3 students scored “Good” (6%), 4 students scored “Fair” (8%), 8 students scored “Poor” (15%), and 1 student scored “Very Poor” (2%) in the test. Finally, in order to find the correlation, the researcher used the Z-Scores of the two variables, and the finding showed that there was a significant correlation between Students’ perception of English fanfiction as reading material (X) and the Reading Comprehension (Y), the strength of the relationship was categorized as a moderate positive correlation, which can be confirmed by the result of the Pearson correlation which is 0.458 and the significant value which is 0.270.
