Nowadays, English is also important in Indonesian workplace as many companies require the ability to speak English. Hence, it is beneficial to improve pragmatic competence to be able to use English as a communication device. A person’s pragmatic competence can be assessed based on his/her speech act behavior. Request is one of the most difficult speech act behaviors, especially for second language learners. Hence, this study aims to determine the internal request modifications employed by the Indonesian speakers when delivering requests in English based on the social variables. This research applied qualitative research approach and utilizes pragmatic analysis to obtain an in-depth understanding of participants’ perspectives on the research phenomenon from the participants’ responses. The subject of this study is two native Indonesian who frequently uses English at their workplace and has a minimum five years of experience in said field. This study used questionnaire in the form of WDCT and unstructured interview to collect the data. The data collected from the questionnaire in the form of composition is then classified using the Request Modification Framework by BlumKulka et al. (1989) using coding technique. From this research, it is found that lexical downgraders was used twelve times, lexical upgraders was used two times, and syntactic downgraders was used eleven times. During the total of 27 occcurences, marker ‘please’, consultative devices, subjectivizers, intensifiers, lexical uptoners, conditional structure, conditional clause, interrogative, and aspect were used. Meanwhile, Downtoners, Understaters/hedges, Cajolers, Time intensifiers, Negation of a Preparatory Condition, and Past Tense are not used. For researcher who intends to do a further study, it is recommended to have a bigger size of subjects for a more comprehensive and detailed data. It may also be worthwhile to research those whose work experiences is less than five years for a different perspective.
