An Analysis of Presupposition Used in Short Story Rabbit-Proof Fence Written by Garimara
The purposes of this research are to find the types of presupposition and language functions in the presupposition used in short story Rabbit-Proof Fence written by Garimara. The researcher uses Yule’s theory of types of presupposition and Jakobson’s theory to find out language functions in presupposition used in short story Rabbit-Proof Fence. This research employs descriptive qualitative methods and a pragmatic approach. Furthermore, the data were taken from the sentences in the written form that contains presupposition triggers and language function. In the short story, the researcher found 4 types of presupposition, they are existential presupposition, factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, and structural presupposition. In addition, the researcher also found 4 kinds of language function in the presupposition used in the short story, they are referential, emotive, directive, and phatic. The implications of using presuppositions and its language functions in the short story are to describe the plot of the story, strengthen ideas in the story, and clarify the meaning that want to convey by the author and the main characters in the short story.
