The purpose of this study was to find out students’ difficulties in thesis proposal writing in the English Department of Mulawarman University. The design of this study was a qualitative phenomenological study that aims to see students' difficulties in their thesis proposal writing period. The subject of this study was English Language Education Program students at the English Department of Mulawarman University. The data were collected through interviews. The result of the interview informed that basically, all participants stated their responses to interview questions that included 5 aspects, such as; the thesis, technical, consultation, personal matters, and administrative. All participants expressed their overall difficulties with the thesis proposal writing process. Participants had difficulties in Chapter 1 and Chapter 3, difficulties in meeting their lecturer, difficulties in gathering signatures for the seminar requirement, and difficulties in dividing time between work as a teacher and time to write a thesis. Varying coping strategies they do, such as working on their thesis together with friends, continuously writing the thesis, contacting their lecturer via online message, gathering the required documents for a seminar, and working their job as a teacher in daylight time and working on their thesis on the night.
