VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGIES APPLIED BY ENGLISH EDUCATION PROGRAM STUDENTS OF MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY

Thesis English Language Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Mulawarman University, Samarinda. Advisor I: Dr. Iwan Setiawan, M.Pd, and Advisor II : Dr. Desy Rusmawaty. MA. This study aims to describe vocabulary learning strategies applied by second, fourth and sixth semester student of mulawarman university. This research used a quantitative survey method. The data was collected using a questionnaire, shared using Google Forms. 130 of 260 students answered the questionnaire. The result showed that the most frequently used strategies by Mulawarman University students are determination strategies with mean score 3.68, followed by memory strategy with average 3.57, next is metacognitive with average 3.23, then social strategy with average 3.10, and the least frequently used strategies is cognitive strategy with mean score 2.96. vocabulary learning strategy applied by Mulawarman University student are determination as the most common used with mean score 3.68. This strategy was most utilized because the student can used the electronic dictionary anytime and everywhere to help them in learning vocabulary. The dictionary also give more explanation on how to use the new words correctlyā€¯. In addition English language media help the students to learn and understand the new vocabularies. Based on the results of the One-Way ANOVA, it shows that there are differences in the use of strategies based on length of study, particularly in the social strategy aspect. This indicate that students with longer study durations tend to use social trategies more than students with shorter study durations. Students with longer study durations are more comfortable interacting with classmates to ask about lessons or vocabulary, while tudents with shorter study durations may be less familiar and less inclined to interact with classmates. This indicate students who have been in the academic environment longer may have built stronger social networks with their classmates, which makes them more comfortable interacting and sharing information
