This study aims to describe the problems faced by the sixth semester students of the English Department in Mulawarman University in speaking performance during presentation and their strategies to improve their speaking. This research used a quantitative survey method. The data was collected using a questionnaire divided into two sections speaking problems, and strategies, shared using Google Forms. 71 of 91 students answered the questionnaire. The result showed that linguistic related problems was the problem most faced by the participants with the percentage of 53%. Vocabulary showed to be the most faced in linguistics related problems. The participants were confused to choose and combine vocabulary. In addition, anxiety was the most faced by the participants in psychological related problems. This indicate the participants were feeling nervous when they speak with and or other people. As for the strategies to improve speaking performance, meta-cognitive strategies were the most common strategies used by the participants with a mean score of 3,80. followed by compensation strategies (3,76), social strategies (3,74), cognitive strategies (3,72), affective strategies (3,54), and memory strategies (3,33). To conclude, vocabulary was the challenge that was faced the most by the participant in speaking performance. To improve their speaking performance, the participants commonly used meta-cognitive strategies.
