OUT-OF-SCHOOL ENGLISH EXPOSURE OF THE ENGLISH STUDENTS AT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY
It is important for students to be exposed to English language outside of their learning environment because they acquire languages better when they are exposed to them in a relaxing environment. In relation to that, the purpose of this research was to find out the exposure students had towards English outside of their school and whether there was a correlation between the type of exposure and the level of their English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This research used quantitative research design with descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation as the analysis techniques. The population for this research was the 201 English students in Year 2022 and 2023 at Mulawarman University, with 56 students as the sample. This research used a questionnaire adopted from Munoz (2020) and a document of the students’ English test scores which was obtained from the faculty as the instruments. This research found that the activity participants engaged with the most is listening to music in English, with most of the participants answering that they listen to music in English every day. This research also found that some exposure activities have a significant correlation with participants’ listening, speaking, and writing skills but it did not find a significant correlation with their reading skills. Based on those findings, it is suggested that the students be encouraged to do more of the activities that expose them to English language in order to support their learning.
