AN ANALYSIS OF EUPHEMISM IN HISTORY AND CULTURE SECTION OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ONLINE MAGAZINE
Euphemism is a part of linguistics that is frequently used in the mass media and literature to minimize the impact of potentially unpleasant or uncomfortable language. In addition to everyday life, euphemisms could help people to understand easily the information they received, maintain ethics and politeness, avoid controversy with each other, and reduce stigma in society so they do not misunderstand or offend. This term can also be found in magazines. This research aims to analyze the types proposed by Allan and Burridge (14) and functions proposed by Burridge (67) of euphemisms used in the History and Culture section of National Geographic magazine, especially on the tradition part with a sociolinguistic approach. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The result of the research showed that there were fourteen expressions of euphemism and from those expressions the researcher found eight types of euphemisms, such as circumlocution, hyperbole, acronyms, metonymy, metaphor, flippancy, understatement, and remodelling. Then, the researcher found three functions of euphemisms such as protective, provocative, and ludic. It is used to conceal the meaning of words, soften words for things that may offend members of the community who uphold the tradition, and soften words to maintain politeness so that they do not harm the author and cultural community.
