ANTI-HERO’S JOURNEY OF THE MAIN CHARACTER OF HARLEY QUINN: BIRDS OF PREY (2020)
This research analyzes the character of Harley Quinn in the film Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey using the anti-hero theory and Vogler's Hero's Journey. The researcher examines Harley Quinn's characteristics that contrast with the typical hero, as well as elaborating on her adventure as she steps into some challenges commonly encountered by a main character to become a hero through qualitative methods by Kothari and the archetypal approach by Carl Jung. By analyzing data with steps according to Taylor-Powell and Renner, which consists of figures of scenes that capture the actions, as well as dialogues and narrations, the results indicate that Harley Quinn successfully traverses 9 out of the 12 stages of the Hero's Journey, although she fulfills all the characteristics of an anti-hero according to Vogler, namely 1) an outcast, 2) a person who was honored, and 3) a rebel. The findings show that Harley goes through development from a chaotic criminal to a morally complex anti-hero as she finds independence, forms alliances, and confronts her mistakes.
