Language Disorder of Asperger Syndrome Character in The Night Clerk Film
This study is a psycholinguistic research on the verbal and nonverbal language disorders of the main character in the film The Night Clerk, who has Asperger's syndrome. The goal of this study is to identify the linguistic abnormalities represented by Bart in movies. The data came in the form of utterances and screenshots that included both verbal and nonverbal language disorders. The data were analyzed utilizing Miles and Huberman's analytical phases, which include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study found nine out of twelve categories of language disorders in Bart's language based on Attwood’s theory. There were four verbal language disorders found in Bart’s character: lack of pragmatics, literal interpretation, odd prosody, verbal fluency. In addition, five
nonverbal language disorders found in the main character were limited use of gesture, gauche body language, limited facial expression, inappropriate facial expression and peculiar stiff gaze. The results show that Bart experiences communication difficulties due to linguistic issues, which also involve atypical facial and gestural patterns.
