The Analysis of Hero’s Journey in Coraline novel by Neil Gaiman
This research focuses on Coraline’s Character as the hero in the Coraline novel by
Neil Gaiman. The researcher aimed to find out the stages of the hero’s journey appeared in
the journey of Coraline’s Character. The purpose of this research is to portray the journey of
Coraline becoming a hero. Coraline’s character was analyzed by using the theory of hero’s
journey from Joseph Campbel. This research used qualitative research and archetypal
approach. The data were generated from words, sentences, paragraphs, narrations, actions,
and dialogues that contain the description of the hero’s journey and the characterization of
Coraline. Because of her bravery and intelligent character stated in her personality, the result
of this research revealed that Coraline’s experienced eleven stages of the hero’s journey out
of the seventeen stages of the hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell which are call to
adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, crossing of the first threshold, belly of the
whale, road of trials, woman as temptress, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, the crossing of the
return threshold, and freedom to live. Based on the analysis, even though not all the stages
were depicted, Coraline ‘s character still showed the aspect of the hero’s journey in the
novel.
