Pedagogical competence among teachers is a critical factor in facilitating effective English language instruction. As outlined in Indonesia's State Law Number 16 of 2007, educators must possess a set of core competencies to enhance specific lessons. This competence is pivotal in ensuring engaging and successful learning experiences for students. Therefore drawing upon Ryegard et al. (2010) the important of pedagogical competence and their challenges also under the Indonsian state of law about pedagogical competence, the researcher investigated the efforts made by the English teacher in SMAN 1 Bontang when he implemented his pedagogical competence in classroom practice and how he handle the challenges. Because there are only 1 English teacher currently in SMAN1Bontang so the researcher use classroom observation and interview as an instruments. Based on the classroom observation results, and interview, the researcher gained a results about the teacher pedagogical skill in SMAN 1 Bontang that is the teacher have the ability to manage the classroom, can give clear instruction and use different approach, the teacher able to develop good communication with the students, and the teacher able to reflect his teaching way to find improvement. and these pedagogical competence are highly manifested in classroom. Finally the challenges the teacher faced during lesson are dealing with students with diverse language proficiency levels, coping with limited resources, managing multiple classes, designing effective assesment, and how to motivating students.
