Analysis of Hero's Journey in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Film
The main objective of this research is to examine the stages of the hero’s journey that the main protagonist, Peter Parker, goes through in the Spider-Man: No Way Home film. This research applied Joseph Campbell’s theory of the hero’s journey to analyze data that comes from Peter’s actions and dialogues during his journey through plot and characterization. The research methodology that was employed in this research was qualitative research and used an archetypal approach. The analysis of this research involved data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion. The analysis revealed that Peter goes through nine out of seventeen stages of the hero’s journey. The stages that Peter undergoes include the call to adventure, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, the belly of the whale, the road of trials, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, the crossing of the return threshold, and freedom to live. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that although Peter does not go through all of the stages of the hero’s journey, he can still be considered a hero because he successfully achieves his ultimate goals. The analysis showcases how the film uses the stages of the hero’s journey to reveal a compelling story, with each stage contributing to the plot’s progression and tension. Therefore, hero’s journey stages are still influental to the modern narrative of superhero.
