STUDENTS' STRATEGIES USED IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION PROCESS BY THE FOURTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY
This research presents an analysis of the translation process used by English students at Mulawarman University. The aims of this research are: 1. to find out what type of translation is used by students; 2. to find out what type of translation is most used by students from the English department. The analysis is based on the theory of Baker (1992). Baker's theory knows what categories are used by English department students and what categories are most used by students. This research was designed in the form of qualitative descriptive research. The subjects in this research were fourth semester students of the English department. Data was collected from students' final assignments in the introduction to translation course. From the results of the final assignment there were 22 data. From all this data, 14 times students used translation by a more general word, 20 times translated by cultural substitution, 15 times translated by omission of words, 11 times translated by illustration and 5 times translated by paraphrasing. This can be indicated that the type most widely used by students of the English department is translation by cultural substitution.
