THE USE OF SHORT STORIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN LONG KALI

Advisors: (1) Prof. Dr. Saraka, M.Pd and (2) Dr. Yuni Utami Asih, M.Pd This research was conducted to find out how teachers use short stories in teaching English and what types of short stories are used by teachers to teach English at junior high schools in Long Kali through observations during three meetings. This research uses a qualitative research design through observation to collect data from class IXA students at Long Kali Middle School at three different meetings. The results showed that, the teacher used teaching methods in accordance with general teaching guidelines consisting of pre-activities, main activities and post-activities. Other results also show that in the three meetings observed, the teacher used two short stories, namely "Sangkuriang" and "The Golden Star Fruit Tree". In the three meetings observed, short stories were used by teachers to practice students' skills. At the first meeting, the teacher uses short stories to practice reading and speaking skills. At the second meeting the teacher used short stories to practice students' critical thinking through activities analyzing the elements of short stories. Furthermore, at the third meeting the teacher used short stories to practice students' writing and reading skills through story-making activities. In this activity students are asked to write short stories based on their experiences, of course using correct writing rules. Students are asked to write short stories in their respective notebooks, this is an activity that train students' writing skills. Then several students were asked to retell the results of the short stories they had written in front of the class. This activity can train students' reading skills. From the results of this research, there are still several skills and elements that according to researchers can still be trained, such as listening skills and practicing grammar. Therefore, further research is needed to find out to what extent short stories can be used for teaching English.
